Humidity can often be an overlooked aspect of an indoor hydroponic grow room. Commonly, growers will focus on the temperature control side of things, but not necessarily the humidity. It’s not so important for us humans, but for plants it is arguably the most important aspect of a hydroponic grow room that you can control to achieve a yield of exceptional quality and quantity.
HOW DO FARAN HR GROW ROOM HUMIDIFIERS WORK?
Faran HR grow room humidifiers work by centrifugal action. A reservoir of water sits at the bottom of the unit. Above this reservoir a rotating collar, with slits around its circumference, spins at a very high speed sucking the water up and smashing it into a fine vapour before it is released through the spout at the top of the unit. The reservoir of water is maintained with an auto top up valve, connected to a larger reservoir such as a water butt with the fitting kit, so very little day to day maintenance is required by the grower.
The ‘smashed’ water vapour then makes its way around your grow room and slowly evaporates into the air, raising the humidity as it does so. The unit continues to do this until the set point has been reached on the controlling humidistat, or the end time is reached on a timer. It is always preferable to control the units with humidistats, as a timed humidity release may be providing either too much, or too little water vapour to your environment.
The two different models are suitable for different sized areas. The HR-15 humidifier should adequately cover an area up to 30 metres square, while the HR-50 should adequately cover an area up to 150 metres squared.
HOW DOES HUMIDITY WORK?
In a hydroponics grow room, humidity is possibly the most important aspect of the environment that you can control. It is partly responsible for regulating the amount of transpiration seen from a plant and without adequate transpiration levels your plant will suffer! Too low a humidity will result in your plant transpiring excessively, exceeding the amount supplied from the roots resulting in limp, droopy and floppy plants. Too high a high humidity will result in very low transpiration rates, causing issues with positive root pressure (leading to stretching) and leading to nutrient issues with elements such as calcium.
You need to get the humidity at the right levels throughout all stages of your grow to ensure transpiration levels are balanced with the root pressure so your plants physical form is not negatively affected and the plant can adequately cool itself at any given moment. 99% of all the water your plant takes up goes into keeping itself cool. Typically, less than 1% is used for photosynthesis. The sort of levels you need throughout an entire grow vary considerably, and without adequate controls in place, your plants are in for a rough ride.
Broadly speaking, you want to have nice high levels in your hydroponics grow room when your plants are young and lower it down as your plants get larger and start creating dense flowers. A high humidity level for younger, establishing plants is ideal to stop excessive transpiration levels. A lower humidity for older flowering plants is necessary to prevent the onset of diseases like Botrytis (grey mould) destroying your entire crop.
Throughout the growing cycle, you need to harden your plants off to a lower humidity as quickly as possible, but at the same time gradually enough to not place excessive water stress on them. As each new leaf set is produced in a growing plant, it creates a definite number of stomata. This number of stomata depends on the conditions at the time and will not change as the leaf becomes larger. So, as each new leaf set is created, you need to gradually change the environment conditions to tell the plant to create more stomata on each successive set of leaves, so they can cope and perform better in the demanding environment they will find themselves towards the end of the flowering cycle.
HUMIDITY AND TEMPERATURE
You should not consider humidity as a standalone variable, as it is directly related to the air temperature. The term ‘Relative Humidity’ is used to take account for this. Essentially the higher the air temperature is, the more water it can hold. For example, if you had a temperature of 25 degrees and a humidity of 70%, raising the temperature by a few degrees will lower the humidity as a result. This principle can also be used in reverse. If you are struggling with heat on a hot day, and your humidity is low, raising it up may push the temperatures back into an acceptable range for your plants.
TIPS FOR USING HR GROW ROOM HUMIDIFIERS
Try to make sure the water supply to the unit has a lukewarm temperature as the water vapour created needs to evaporate in the atmosphere. A cold water temperature will result in a longer time for the vapor to evaporate, meaning a greater lag time in the change in humidity levels.
Do not place the HR humidifier directly under, or near your carbon filter. Excessive water vapour and humidity will block the pores of the activated carbon and stop it from working. Not an ideal situation to run into when you have a particularly fragrant crop type.
Avoid using these units with a hard water supply. The contaminants from the water will end up coating your reflectors (reducing reflectivity) and once again block up your carbon filters. If you are in a hard water area (and even in some softer areas), it would be wise to make use of a Reverse Osmosis machine to make sure the water vapour is squeaky clean, and will not damage other equipment.
Try to place a pedestal fan, or other grow room fan nearby the spout of the humidifier so the vapour is instantly dispersed as widely as possible throughout your room.
Clean the unit between every grow cycle. Algal growth may build up within the unit (as usually happens when light meets water) and you do not want this negatively effecting the units overall operating capacity.
